George Michael Dead at 53
December 26, 2016
The world was shocked on Sunday, December 25 when news broke that British singer-songwriter George Michael had died. According to reports, the music legend "passed away peacefully at home" in Oxfordshire, UK. He was 53.
George Michael's publicist released a statement that confirmed the icon's passing which read, " It is with great sadness that we confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."
According to Forbes, the singer-songwriter known as George Michael was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in north London of Greek origins.
He rose to fame in the 1980's as a member of the British pop duo WHAM! selling over 100 million albums, with songs such as "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," "Freedom," and "Everything She Wants." George Michael went on to have even greater success as a solo artist bringing us hits such as "Careless Whisper," and "Faith." Michael achieved superstar status and has collaborated with superstars such as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Elton John.
It is hard to believe that 2016 has claimed yet another music icon. Earlier this year we lost Prince, then David Bowie, and now George Michael. As a child of the 1980's I am beginning to feel some type of way about this year taking the musicians who wrote, sung, and orchestrated the soundtrack of my childhood too soon.
"I still believe that music is one of the greatest gifts that God gave to man." - George Michael
Thank you, George, for sharing your gift with the world.
Rest in peace.
