Sherlock is ready for his close-up! Sherlock special gets a title, air date, and theatre release.
I am very excited about the return of the logically astute and always cheeky Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming BBC Sherlock special. In an earlier blog post, I shared the official trailer for the Victorian-era Sherlock special, which at the time had a rumoured airdate of Christmas Day 2015. Well, the official air date and title of the special has been released. I'm sad to say that you'll have to wait an extra week after Christmas as the Sherlock special, "The Abominable Bride," will air on 1 January, 2016. Happy New Year! What better way to start off 2016? But wait, there's more!
Sherlock fans will be able to watch the 90-minute Victorian special Sherlock: The Abominable Bride on the big-screen. In addition to airing on BBC and PBS Masterpiece, Sherlock is getting its first theatrical release in limited movie theatres in the U.K. and U.S. Why the big-screen now? According to Entertainment Weekly, BCC Worldwide executive VP Soumya Sriraman had this to say, "We have a franchise that creates excitement for all the right reasons... Three years in a row we've taken Doctor Who out to theatres and it breaks records each time. Fans want to congregate and share Sherlock together." I'm sure the big-screen success of Sherlock co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) also helped the BBC to make the decision to give Sherlock a theatrical launch.
Tickets for Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will be available starting Friday, November 6 for purchase online at www.FathomEvents.com or at participating theatre box offices. Fans who see the theatrical version of the special will see 20 minutes of bonus footage including an exclusive pre-show set tour of 221B Baker Street by writer/executive producer Steven Moffat. Fans will also be treated to a post-show "making of" short with stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
The television premiere of the episode Sherlock: The Abominable Bride is set for 1 January, 2016 both in the U.K. and the U.S., making it the first time the show has premiered in both countries on the same day. The theatrical version will premiere on 5 January and play again on 6 January, 2016.
Watch the official extended trailer below and get excited with me!
