Movie Review: The Impossible (2012)

July 20, 2014

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was a natural disaster that took everyone by surprise. The tsunami, which was caused by a high magnitude earthquake, caused damage and devastation from Africa to Thailand. The Impossible is a movie that tells the story of one family, out of many, that experienced the chaos and destruction caused by this tsunami.

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!

The Impossible starts out with a family of five, the Bennetts, flying to Thailand for Christmas holiday. The mother, Maria (Naomi Watts), tries to put the father's (Ewan McGregor) mind at ease about setting the alarm before they left home. We then see the beautiful landscape of Thailand's coast as the backdrop to the beach resort where the family is staying. Christmas day arrives and the family celebrates with gifts, laughter, and love. The day after Christmas begins bright and sunny with the family enjoying the pool area. The family, let alone the viewer, are not prepared the the following series of events. The wind blows, birds take flight, and the ground begins to shake before we see a palm tree fall in the distance then a large rush of water invade the resort slamming everyone and everything in its path. The family is separated and the remainder of the movie displays their journey to stay alive and hopefully reunite. This movie, based on a true story, wracked my insides, made me cry, and made my heart expand with the thought that miracles happen.
