2016 EE BAFTA Awards

The Revenant Reigns at BAFTA Awards

The 2016 BAFTA Awards were held on Sunday, and The Revenant won big, winning Best Film, Best Director for Alejandro Gonzalez, and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.

DiCaprio's Titanic co-star, Kate Winslet, won the supporting actress award for her portrayal of Joanna Hoffman in the film Steve Jobs. Winslet was gracious as ever when she accepted her award thanking the real Joanna Hoffman and praised her fellow nominees saying it had been "an extraordinary year for women."

John Boyega, Star Wars, took home the Rising Star Award, the only award of the night that was voted for by the public. Boyega called his win "a fluke" during his acceptance speech and went on to say that was going to share the award "with all the young dreamers who are determined and hard-working."

What would an awards show be without drama? While the British tend to avoid the level of drama we see in the United States at award shows, this year's BAFTA Awards saw some controversy when Australian actress Rebel Wilson commented on the diversity issue and said she had been "practicing my transgendered face" when she was on stage presenting the award best supporting actor.

2016 BAFTA host Stephen Fry has deleted his Twitter account since Sunday when he got into some hot water over comments made about Costume Design Award winner Jenny Beavan attending the award ceremony dressed "as a bag lady."
